Establishment of ISIS is based on constructivism.

The Rise of ISIS.

A video briefly explaining how ISIS was found.

ISIS also known as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant was originally formed in 1999 with the group originating as Jama’at al-Tawhidwal-Jihad and pledging allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2004. This organization also later participated in the Iraqi insurgency which followed the invasion of Iraq in 2003 by Western powers. The group formed the prototype for ISIS in 2006 as the Islamic State of Iraq also known as ISI. Under the control of al-Baghdadi, ISI sent its soldiers who named them Jabhat an-Nursrah li-Ahli ash-Sham into Syria when the Syrian Civil War broke out in 2011.

Jabhat an-Nursrah li-Ahli ash-Sham also known as al-Nusra Front, merged with ISI in 2013 under al-Baghdadi’s command. The organization was renamed Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) which has also been called ISIS. However, both al-Nusra and al-Qaeda declined the merger and a power struggle lasted for 8 month until al-Qaeda claimed to cut all ties with ISIS on 3rd February 2014.

What I can see from the establishment of ISIS is that the organization was intentionally constructed to be the cruel group that it is now today. Such groups do not appear from nowhere, but rather they are a product of history. The group was formed and developed in an environment where terrorist theology was considered a righteous and effective system for facing enemies of the organization. This kind of anarchical system did not naturally exist but rather was human creation.

The members of the ISIS were deeply influenced by al-Qaeda who was responsible for the terrorist attack of September 11th in the United States of America under the leadership of Osama bin laden. These people have already developed their own specific social values, norms and assumptions of society and its future, and thus this social construction has been enforced by all members since the start of 1999.

An example of one of their specific social values was the use of the slave trade system. The Economist [1]has reported that ISIS has been kidnapping a large number of girls and young women for slavery, and selling and distributing them as sex slaves.

The Daily Telegraph [2]has even reported that out of all the women who have been captured by ISIS, virgins are selected to be given to commanders as sexual slaves.

The New York Times [3]published a story in August 2015 argued that “The trade in Yazidi women and girls has created a persistent infrastructure, with a network of warehouses where the victims are held, viewing rooms where they are inspected and marketed, and a dedicated fleet of buses used to transport them.”

These kinds of values and norms are social constructions which are deemed unacceptable by most countries but are embedded in the culture that ISIS exhibits. The normality of this value system is emphasised every time a slave is captured or traded. Due to the agreement of the population of the state, there is nothing to stop ISIS authorities from deciding that the slavery is legal within their territory.

ISIS is obviously constructing their own nation which does not consider the complaints of the outside world as being relevant to their aims or decision making. The relationship between ISIS’s anarchical structure and its authoritarian agents are complex as the system relies upon social reproduction. Their authoritarian system and the understanding of their social norms were socially constructed by their own members. They have constructed their own identities through their difference to other nations such as their use of slavery.

ISIS members are supportive of their system because of the benefits they have gained under its control, and so they have continuously used and expanded this system since their beginnings. This kind of anarchical system has also helped ISIS to sustain their territory and maintain support from their members and other people who have benefited from it. It was built on the ruin of the cities and through the blood of both Iraqi and Syrian civilians, but this cannot be completely attributed for the current state of ISIS.

However, because of slavery and the massacres that ISIS engaged in in previous years, the organization is not accepted by most nations worldwide. ISIS was not only fighting with both Syria and Iraq‘s government forces, they also fighting with the Syria rebel forces within Syria territory. Importantly they also engaged in fighting with international forces sent by United Nations, which included support from over 54 countries around the world.
